21 February marked a major step forward in the extension of line 17 of the tramway linking Annemasse to Geneva. The first rail weld was made, symbolising the official launch of track-laying work. The event was attended by all those involved in the project, including C. Dupessey – Mayor of Annemasse, G. Doublet – President of Annemasse Agglo, M. Saddier – President of the Departmental Council, P. Maudet – State Councillor for the Republic and Canton of Geneva, Y. Le Breton – Prefect, and ETF teams and representatives.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A strategic extension for cross-border mobility<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Line 17 of the tramway is essential for cross-border travel, providing a link between Annemasse and Geneva in just 25 minutes. Following an initial extension in 2019, this new phase of work will extend the line by 1.2 km and create three new stations, linking the Lyc\u00e9e des Gli\u00e8res to the Moillesulaz customs station in 12 minutes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The contract was awarded to a consortium led by ETF’s Sud-Est agency (leader), in collaboration with Eurovia, Benedetti-Guelpa, T\u00e9relian and Sols Savoie. ETF’s local presence is a major asset in ensuring efficient site management and fluid exchanges with stakeholders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first works, led by Eurovia and Benedetti-Guelpa, began in September 2024. ETF teams are currently busy laying the rails. At the peak of activity, up to 30 ETF employees will be hired to complete the project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Technical and environmental specificities<\/h3>\n\n\n\n


One of the main challenges of this project lies in the nature of the rail network involved: a metric track, with a gauge of just one metre between the rails. This type of network, which has a long history in the region, requires specific expertise to ensure that the new infrastructure is compatible with existing systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition, a section of the route will pass through the centre of Annemasse on a floating slab, a solution that limits noise and vibration pollution. The rest of the route will be laid on conventional concrete track.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In an environmentally-friendly approach, the worksite is part of the Air Climate Charter, affirming a strong commitment to sustainable cross-border mobility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
