The job of a tyre and brake technician: ensuring safety right down to the last brake

Publié le 22 July 2025

In this new episode on railway maintenance professions, we discover a job that is as discreet as it is essential: that of a pneumatician-brakeman.
At the Equipment Maintenance Agency (AMM), Stéphan shares his daily routine, which involves test benches, technical rigour and team spirit.

Braking is a key component in the proper functioning of railway vehicles. The job of a pneumatic brake technician consists of maintaining and testing the entire pneumatic braking system: from cylinders to distributors, including pneumatic motors.

Cutting-edge tools for precision

In the field, Stéphan uses the Simef RA2 bench, a high-precision measuring device. It is used to test the tightness and operation of brake distributors, with a high level of technical requirements.

This type of bench is essential for validating the system’s compliance before it is put back into service.

Autonomy, expertise, team spirit

This job requires excellent knowledge of mechanical and pneumatic systems. But it also requires the ability to work independently, especially when travelling to sites.

“You have to be able to work alone and know the equipment perfectly in order to work safely. “

Within the AMM, it is also the strength of the collective that makes the difference: exchanges between colleagues, mutual assistance and knowledge sharing are at the heart of the team dynamic.

A passion to be passed on

Stéphan already has a clear goal for the future: to pass on his expertise to the next generation.

‘What I would like to do in the future is to train young people in these essential tasks. Brakes are vital on a machine.’

This powerful testimony highlights the human richness of our technical professions and the daily commitment of those who work behind the scenes to ensure the performance of our equipment.

‘What I deliver is a safe machine. Because my colleagues are inside it.’

It is a highly responsible job, in which every action counts to ensure the safety of the teams and the reliability of the construction sites.
