Second extension of the storage centre in Meyzieu: ETF & La Champenoise serving the Lyon tramway network

Publié le 20 June 2025

To accommodate the arrival of new 43-metre trams, ETF is carrying out the second extension of the Meyzieu tram depot (69). This large-scale project aims to increase storage capacity and improve the operation of the T3 line for its client SYTRAL Mobilités.

Our teams at the South-East agency worked with La Champenoise to create:

  • The installation of a 4-route comb and a simple junction (BS)
  • 600 metres of concrete-embedded storage tracks, comprising four 150-metre tracks
  • The construction of a third track on the T3 line, facilitating the entry of trams into the depot. This work was carried out in a blitz operation, with a complete shutdown of operations and completion in record time.

ETF was able to draw on the expertise of La Champenoise employees, particularly Florian Barbin, site supervisor for the ballast track section, and Anthony Lopes, surveyor, whose precision was crucial in monitoring the site’s topography.

A reusable lifting device

The ETF teams have adopted a reusable track lifting method, based on the expertise of the Strasbourg agency. Unlike concrete-fixed jacking devices, this system allows:

  • Lift and replace the track without damaging it
  • Improve logistical efficiency

Integration and training: a springboard for young people

This project is also an opportunity to showcase the growing skills of young employees, such as Laura Martins-Masso, a site supervisor in the Graduate Programme, who is managing the project alongside the sector manager.

“From the outset, I was fortunate to be surrounded by experienced teams who supported me in my learning. I was able to count on my site manager on a daily basis, as well as the area manager, who was always available to answer my questions and help me overcome any doubts.

This project is a real challenge: it involves a lot of coordination, a demanding schedule and many unforeseen events, which has pushed me to develop my ability to adapt.

It’s also my first project on concrete tracks, a technical challenge that I’ve gradually learned to master. Today, I’m able to communicate with the client on my own and manage certain tasks independently, even if I still need support on some assignments.

I’ve seen real progress in my work, and the warm welcome from the teams has helped me feel completely at home.”

At the same time, 900 hours of professional integration were provided, reinforcing ETF’s CSR commitment in the field.

Project delivered ahead of schedule: coordination and performance by ETF

Despite an initial three-month delay in the programme, the La Champenoise teams successfully rose to the challenge: the third track was put into service two days ahead of schedule.

With 25 employees working in shifts, this operation demonstrates the synergy between different trades, the versatility and the technical expertise of our teams, all working to promote sustainable urban mobility.
