Western extension of Strasbourg’s F tramway: a responsible, certified construction project

Publié le 19 September 2025

The western extension of Strasbourg’s tram line F is an example of a new generation of sustainable railway construction projects. Led by ETF teams, this project fully integrates carbon emission reduction challenges.

Each new tramway extension brings its own set of challenges, but on this project, the environment has become the priority. In particular, CTS has imposed the preservation of trees along the entire route and, for the first time, the implementation of enhanced carbon consumption monitoring.

This obligation translates into regular reporting, enabling the identification of the main sources of emissions, the implementation of corrective actions during construction and the creation of a reliable database to optimise future rail projects.

Concrete actions to reduce the carbon footprint

Supply has favoured short supply chains, with rails produced locally just 150 km from the construction site, as well as the use of lighter sleepers to limit the weight transported and reduce energy consumption.

At the same time, the gradual transition to electric tools marks a key step towards a low-carbon construction site. This change has two benefits: a significant reduction in CO₂ emissions and a reduction in noise pollution in urban areas, improving both the comfort of local residents and the working conditions of the teams.

VINCI environmental label obtained

Thanks to the solutions implemented and the commitment of the teams, this site has been awarded the VINCI environmental label. This distinction recognises a concrete approach that is raising standards towards more environmentally friendly construction sites.
