ETF is drawing on all its expertise to support the RATP on the RER A line
In April, ETF, in collaboration with the RATP, carried out a major project on the RER A line at Boissy-Saint-Léger. The work was carried out jointly by teams from ETF Île-de-France, Travaux Mécanisés Nationaux, Grands Projets Ferroviaires, Caténaire and ETF Services. This project highlights the synergy between ETF’s technical and human resources in order to improve the flow of traffic on the RER A, the busiest line in Île-de-France (and the busiest urban railway line in Europe).
A strategic project to stabilise the RER A tracks
The works took place at night, from 17 to 29 April 2026, in order to minimise the impact on traffic on the RER A line, which is used by 1.14 million people every day. The aim for our teams was to permanently stabilise the track, which had been weakened by its age and various weather events in recent years.
The ETF teams then carried out platform refurbishment work and replaced 400 metres of ballasted track (RVB).
The PUSCAL train: a unique works train for this type of project
To carry out this work, the ETF teams used the PUSCAL train for the first time on the RATP network. This train enables the standardisation of platform and ballast track renewal (RVB) works in densely populated areas. Its use made it possible, in a single night’s work, to complete up to 36 metres of RVB work, including platform drainage, and 72 metres of standard RVB work.
A collective mobilisation of ETF expertise
Teams from Agence Île-de-France carried out the preparatory work, which included laying geotextile for earthworks, securing the site, and carrying out reinforcement and finishing works. ETF’s Major Rail Projects division carried out the main works (RVB and platform drainage).
ETF Services was responsible for train operations and the provision of lorry crew. ETF Caténaire was responsible for raising and adjusting the catenary after the train had passed. This latter task marks a first for the RATP, which has chosen to place its trust in ETF’s teams and to outsource this task.
A partnership to enhance network performance
This project is part of ETF’s vision to help the RATP modernise and improve the safety of its network. These initiatives enable us to ensure access to sustainable and reliable transport for passengers in the Île-de-France region.
